Birthday candles: a tradition dating back to antiquity!

Do you know where the tradition of blowing out birthday candles comes from? The ancient Greeks used to celebrate the birthday of Artemis, goddess of the Moon. For the occasion, her worshippers would bake a round, white cake and illuminate it with candles to recreate the moon’s glow.

The flame was believed to ward off evil spirits; once the spirits were repelled at the end of the feast, the candles were blown out. Even back then, people believed the smoke rising from the flame could carry their wishes up to the heavens. To this day, people still make a silent wish right before blowing out their candles!
